An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

While the warm and dry weather will last through the Memorial Day weekend, we are looking at a significant pattern change in about 6 to 7 days that has the potential to bring some beneficial rain to Alabama.

In the short term, the weather won’t change much through Monday. Mostly sunny warm days and clear nights with highs in the 80s and lows in the 60s. The weather will also be dry down on the Gulf coast, and up in the Great Smoky Mountains. A great weekend to kick off the summer season.

NEXT WEEK: The 00Z GFS continues the trend of developing a long wave trough west of Alabama by mid-week; then rotating through here by the end of the week. This drives a good cold front through here, and the entire setup hints at some significant rain totals for the state. We should note the model continues to move away from the idea of tropical storm development in the Southeast Gulf of Mexico, but that wouldn’t have helped us anyway.

We will introduce the chance of isolated afternoon showers on Tuesday, and “scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms” on Wednesday. Then, the coverage of the rain really increases on Thursday and into Friday as the upper trough swings through. There is potential for one to two inches statewide during the latter half of the week. Then, a dry slot works in here Friday night, and the following weekend (June 2-3) at this point looks dry.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page. As always, some very interesting stories over there.

I will crank out another Weather Xtreme video by 3:30 this afternoon… I know many of you are headed out of town this morning; be safe and enjoy some time with your family. Brian Peters will have the Weather Xtreme videos over the weekend, and my next one will be posted at some point on Monday; it will probably be a little later than usual since it is a holiday, and I will just have one video that day. The schedule gets back to normal on Tuesday!
