With high pressure at the surface and aloft, Central Alabama will enjoy another preview of summer today with just a few clouds and temperatures rising into the middle 80s. The high at the Birmingham airport yesterday hit 88 which tied the record high for April 25th set back in 1896. With a slight increase in humidity, I don’t think we’ll be quite that warm but still unseasonably warm for late April when the average high ought to be about 76.

Looks like there is not much change to our forecast for the next several days with a strong ridge holding the major weather systems off to our west and northwest. This will keep us dry and warm with temperatures reaching the lower 80s. This also keeps the focus for severe weather off to the west and northwest of us across the Central Plains.

But the GFS is now suggesting the frontal system late in the week will make it well into the Southeast US and Central Alabama. I am not buying this surface solution just yet since the upper flow goes zonal at the end of the week which should keep the front just to the north of us. The GFS is suggesting there could be some weak disturbances in the flow which might be enough to bring some scattered showers into the picture. But for the moment, I’m sticking with a drier forecast until we see some later consistency. Still no signs of anything strong to severe.

As we head into voodoo country, the current GFS run does suggest as the model did yesterday that we’ll see a change over to an eastern US trough for a few days before the ridge builds back across the Southeast US around the 7th and 8th of May.
