El Nino – What Does It Mean For Alabama?
You probably saw our post yesterday that NOAA has declared a new El Nino cycle. What does this mean for Alabama? Needless to say, we really don’t know since every El Nino cycle tends to be different, but based on local research from the B’ham NWS office… some things that could happen:
- A higher than normal number of tornados across Alabama in 2010
- Warmer than normal temperatures for the fall and early winter season of 2009/2010
- Cooler than normal temperatures for much of 2010
- Higher than normal precipitation for 2010
- Less than normal snowfall for the 2009/2010 winter season
See the full paper here… interesting reading; it was written a little over a decade ago, but still very relevant.

Was the winterstorm of 1993 a part of El-Nino?

Humm… does this mean we will need to give some snow back?

Chuck, you took the words, or snow, right out of my mouth…

Didn’t I recently hear all of you say on Weather Brains that you shouldn’t make predictions like these?–that they are totally useless? That just leaves everybody wide open for criticism when it doesn’t happen.

It’s about time we had an El Nino.
We’ve had too many La Nina’s in the past 3 years.

Chuck: Uh, yeah, we do have snow! At least, we did in the winter of 1997-98 (which, IRONICALLY, was linked to a strong El Nino), Jan. 2001, Jan. 2008, Mar. 2008, and, most recently, Mar. 1, 2009. We did have at least inch or two in many places in northern and central Alabama.
