Coolness Sticks Around

Some passing clouds helped to keep us from breaking some record lows this morning, but in spite of those clouds, the air feels more fallish instead of the heat and humidity we normally see in the latter part of July. And I for one am glad to have a bit of a breather from the heat and humidity of summer. Fortunately, it looks good for the coolness to stick around for another day or two with a beautiful blue sky – not the milky look of a hazy summer sky – and these cool mornings and pleasant afternoons. Most spots are seeing temperatures on the order of 5 to 8 degrees below our average highs and about 10 degrees below our average lows.
The unusually deep trough over the eastern half of the country is projected to be with for some time. It weakens a bit toward the middle and late part of the week opening the way for daily shower possibilities. Moisture is not expected to increase enough for showers until Wednesday with only isolated showers possible. By Thursday and Friday and into the weekend, there should be enough moisture as well as a series of weak disturbances in that trough to give us some rain chances. But it certainly looks like no big rain events for the next week. Five day QPF also agrees with that with no rain for us.
Tropics remain quiet with a couple of cloudy areas under surveillance, but neither of these two systems appear poised to form a tropical storm in the next couple of days. Storm Prediction Center is outlooking a large area for a slight risk of severe weather today along the eastern slopes of the Rockies and a small area along the southeast coast of Texas.
The GFS holds onto the troughiness over the east through the voodoo period, though not as strong as it is now. I sure like that idea and hope the GFS long range projections are accurate because that would keep us out of any extreme heat – and I like that idea.
