Ida is just a low pressure area near Destin, FL this afternoon, and will move slowly east tonight, taking its rain with it. The visible satellite shows the bright SW edges of taller clouds over central AL lit by the setting sun.

This storm has produced a lot of rain over Alabama. Some rainfall totals as of late afternoon: BHM airport 3.70″, Pleasant Grove 3.29, Ensley 4.29, Hoover 3.68, Calera 3.62, TCL 3.19, Jemison 3.57, Childersburg 3.02, Anniston 2.25, HSV 1.85, Cullman 1.50, MGM 3.16, Auburn 3.50, Brent 5.28, Fort Payne 1.69, Mobile 3.61.

Winds gusted to 35 mph at the Birmingham Airport today, and higher than that on ridge tops. Power outages have been reported, including in parts of Hoover.

Please be careful driving home today. A flood warning continues for much of the BHM metro area until 630 pm. Don’t drive into roadways covered by water…you may not be able to tell the depth, and the road underneath could be washed away.

Unbelievable amounts in the hwy 41 area. Fire dept is building a wall around lake off hwy 41 with sand bags to keep house from flooding. Rain has been steady all day long.

  4. Brian Says:

5 in of rain in Pelham.

  5. Matt falPadgett Says:

rainfall amount of 2.90 inches so far at my location in Moody. With all the leaf’s falling and pine straw it will definitely cause some areas to possibly get backed up increasing the chances for flooding. Be careful out there if you have to get into it.

  6. Jeff Says:

About 3.5″ in Irondale. Be careful on Highway 280 near Lakeshore. Lots of standing water and a few accidents.

  7. db Says:

Been home since 5:40 and it was a light rain. My husband just came home and it was like a typhoon at uab and near Trinity Hospital, downtown. Our rain gauge is in the back yard. We will report tomorrow. Scary drivers out there – you know, you just have to drive 65 in a 40 mph zone and weave in and out of traffic when it rains. This is not Talledega, folks.

  8. Greg in Meadow Brook Says:

Rainfall since midnight through 7 pm at Meadow Brook has been 4.02″. Storm total is 4.57″ here.

  9. Matt G. Says:

I dunno why (I noticed this also before I saw your blog post) . . . but that motion of the rain sort of shrinking away as it converges together like you can see in the loop here just has a strange beauty to it, to me.
