Couple of Wet Periods Ahead

Looks like we will be able to enjoy one more dry day across Central Alabama before we get the first of two wet periods in quick succession. Today will see passing clouds somewhat like yesterday with the afternoon highs once again reaching into the middle 60s.
In the upper atmosphere, one short wave trough coming out of the North Central US will zip across the northern tier of the US and drag a front through the area late tonight and Monday. This will set the stage for some rain mainly after midnight and before noon on Monday. The combination of clouds, rain, and the cold front should keep temperatures in the 50s for the day.
With the upper trough zipping by quickly, we should see a nice day Tuesday with a mix of clouds and sun and highs in the lower 60s. But clouds return quickly Tuesday evening as a surface low develops in the northwestern Gulf of Mexico in response to the closed low ejecting out of the Baja California. This should bring a very wet day to Alabama with heavy rain possible especially from Birmingham southward. In fact, the 5-day rainfall totals for South Alabama could reach into the 4 to 5 inch amounts. Across Central Alabama there will be a strong gradient in rainfall amounts with about 1 inch along the Tennessee-Alabama line to about 4 inches in the vicinity of Montgomery.
The closed low moves by and the surface low heads northeast Wednesday paving the way for dry weather for us into the weekend before the next system brings clouds and rain chances for early the next week.
With a deep long wave trough over the eastern half of the country, we’ll some some pretty chilly days Thursday and Friday with lows flirting with the 20s and highs only in the 50s. These temperatures will be about 7 to 10 degrees below seasonal values for early December.
Looking further afield, the progression of weather systems is forecast to continue into the middle of December though there are no obvious extremes apparent in the GFS output. So we’ll be seeing a day or so of wet weather and then 2 to 4 days of dry weather.

I certainly hope that you’ve had a great holiday weekend. James Spann will be back at it tomorrow morning as he returns to the usual two-a-day Weather Xtreme Videos. Enjoy the day and Godspeed.

Almost balmy here in Vigo this morning with a low of 40. It is a little breezy from generally the south but not strong. It is cloudy and humidity isn’t to high with a lever of 80%. Of course having lived most of my life in Central Florida 80% is down there sometimes considered dry. I guess we will load in a couple of days worty of wood into the house today to be sure it is dry for the next few days to get things started.
Have a good day all.
