Special thanks to all the Skywatchers for staying up with the snow and providing lots of information. Very exciting night as North and Central Alabama saw one of the earliest snows for quite some time.
But the snow was ending this morning while the cold air is going to stick with us. In fact, most of Central Alabama will not see highs beyond the lower 40s today, so if you have plans to be outside for things like the Helena Christmas Parade, be sure to bundle up with several layers to stay warm. Clearing should be relatively rapid by noon time with sunshine on tap for the afternoon. But don’t let the sun fool you since it will remain cold.
Fortunately with the rather zippy weather pattern, temperatures should begin to recover tomorrow after a very cold start with lows down into the lower and middle 20s. The afternoon highs should climb into the lower 50s which will seem quite warm compared with today.
Clouds return Monday as does moisture with a somewhat zonal flow but one that is likely to bring some moisture our way. I don’t expect to see a rainy day but one in which we should see some patchy rain or light showers. The real rain comes back primarily on Tuesday which could be a cloudy, rainy day with rainfall potential of 1 to 2 inches with the next weather system. Just like this system, it will zip out of the picture quickly while the really cold air stays to our north. In fact, we will probably flirt with highs around 60s at mid week.
But we cool off again for the end of the week, though the colder air remains just to our north. This should mean lows around freezing and highs in the middle 50s or so. Another short wave trough coming out of the southern Rockies on Saturday should bring another round of wet weather to Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.
And as you might expect, the GFS continues to maintain the fast flow well into voodoo country with a steady stream of weather systems. Toward the end of the forecast cycle, however, the pattern becomes somewhat complicated with a split between the polar jet and the sub-tropical jet, each with their own short waves. It does not appear that we will seen any particularly cold air through the foreseeable future.

I am excited to be announcing the Helena Christmas Parade later today. The parade is scheduled for 2 pm, so if you have plans to be in the Helena area, be advised that the parade uses 17/52/261 from the Publix/Winn Dixie area to Old Town Helena, so try avoid traveling this route. Stay warm and Godspeed.

Just enough here in Homewood this morning to be pretty and the neighborhood kids to make a snowball or two off the cars. poor dogs’ outside water bowl was skimmed over in ice, but they didn’t stay long anyway!

Here in Vigo only a few flakes around 0200 this morning 2:00am. low was only 34.2 and .02 inches of liquit precip. THis is one of those Oh Wells for us. We were surely looking forward to some snow but it seems to have split and went around us north and south.
Have a good day everyone. Maybe it is waiting for Christmas this year just like us.

We had about 2 inches here in the northern part of Chattanooga. In fact, it just quit snowing about an hour ago (started around 4 AM). The temps are in the mid 30′s and some blue sky is starting to peak through. It was a wet heavy snow and just beautiful – no travel problems here.
