Alabama Weather at 5:40 am
It is a wet morning across Alabama. Almost every square mile of the state has received rain overnight and it continues this morning.
I guess you could call this a bit of good news. The Tornado Watch that was issued hours ago has not panned out. We did have one Tornado Warning down in extreme South Alabama, but I do not know of any damage. Much of North and Central Alabama went through the night without any type of warning.
The Tornado Watch expires at 9:00 this morning. Rain will be ending later this morning. Almost all of the rain has moved out of Mississippi.
At 5:40 a.m., heavy rain was fairly widespread over North/Central and Central Alabama in counties like Winston, Cullman, Blount and Jefferson. There was also a narrow line of strong thunderstorms in West/Central Alabama curving from east of Centreville down into Wilcox County.
I would advise to allow extra time for morning drive (sometimes called the rush hour), especially in the bigger cities like Birmingham. The rain will be steady for at least a couple of hours and heavy at times. We could even see some street flooding.
Later this morning when the rain moves on east, the sun should break out at times and our temperature this afternoon should approach a very warm 70 degrees. Nobody in Alabama is accustomed to that lately. But that warmth could also trigger some more possible strong storms this afternoon. Colder air will move in overnight and our low temperature by tomorrow morning should be in the 40s.
