Another Soaking Ahead

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RAIN SET TO RETURN: Clouds will thicken across Alabama tonight ahead of the next storm system rolling along in the southern branch of the jet stream. Rain will move in during the day tomorrow, becoming widespread and heavier tomorrow night as the surface low moves up into Mississippi. Then, on Friday, while the heaviest rain will be to the east, we will still see periods of light rain or drizzle with low clouds all day. The NAM is printing a whopping 2.78″ of rain for Birmingham with this system, while the GFS is 2.18″. So, needless to say it sure looks like a good soaking.

Seems like the rain will be spread out enough for no major flash flooding issues here, but if we do wind up with 2 to 3 inches of rain, some localized flooding problems are certainly possible. No severe weather is expected with no surface based instability showing up.

TO THE NORTH: We should note this storm will bring lots of snow to the area from Indianapolis to Cincinnati and Washington/Baltimore. Some spots west of the District of Columbia could see two feet by Saturday.

OUR WEEKEND: Saturday looks like a cloudy, breezy, and chilly day with a high only in the mid 40s and some risk of morning drizzle. The sun returns in full forcer on Sunday with a high in the mid to upper 40s.

NEXT WEEK: The parade of storms rolls along. The next storm system will bring rain to much of Alabama by Monday night and early Tuesday. Models are all over the road on this one, but most of the 12Z global models bring enough warm air advection into Alabama for just rain. But, this event is a long way away and forecast confidence is rather low. Watch the Weather Xtreme video for details.

VOODOO COUNTRY: The GFS also likes the idea of a storm in the 2/13-14 time frame, with potential for snow or ice for parts of the Deep South. See Dr. Tim’s discussion below; with the negative AO and the active southern storm track, the rest of February promises to be very interesting around here.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on Thursday February 11 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. See the entire tour schedule here!

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

I had a great time today visiting with the kids at West End Elementary in Altoona; be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40 News! The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…

I read an article about Vancouver not having snow but rain and they are having to haul snow in for the Olympics… Could EL NINO be causing this problem in this area of the Americas?

  2. curt05 Says:

El Nino may have something to do with it i dunno, maybe “CLimate Change” does….mostly known as Global Warming.
Honestly I think the earth is going through a Climate Change because alot of ice thats been around for a LONG LONG time has been melting the past few years…..no one can deny that, there sure hasent been any new ice packs forming

its Climate Change because some of the really really cold places on earth are tending to warm up, but some of the usually warmer places are seeing more cold.
The whole entire earth isant getting warmer…..yet. If a whole whole lot of ice does melt in hundreds of years i think it will get really hot everywhere for a period of time, then balance back out sooner or later.
Everyone just freaked out at first and called it Global Warming and most people thought it meant it was going to get hotter everywhere…..thats why it referred to as Climiate change now, because some places are seeing colder than average temps. Some think this Climate Change could be actually leading to a new ice age.
Really honestly i can tell you that NOBODY knows what will happen……just like James Spann can not forecast what will happen more than 6 or 7 days out.
    Its all Voo-Doo.
Sorry for the ramble haha, post 1 just got me going for some reason.

I hate to be debbie downer here but winter is only interesting when we get the snow and any storm this far out seems to hold promise in the early computers but fizzles as it approaches. I hope I am wrong.

Seems like a bad broken record to say it, but its very difficult to predict snow in alabama, really with any success at all. Blogs like this help us sort what is likely, and what is remote. I’m always ahead of my non-weather fans because I can tell them within the hour what is being reported here. Makes me look like a genius, which is a monumental task by itself!!

  5. Michael Says:

This one is already starting the process, it is heading north leaving us in the warm area….looks like 40 and rain…they never come back down.

  6. chris Says:

Just have to wait and see. Hopefully we can get dumped on before April. With the weather systems coming out of the gulf every 4 days maybe the timing will be right at some point.

  7. James (Tuscaloosa) Says:

We’re long overdue for some real “winter weather”

4-6 inches pease, pretty please, w/ sugar on it. :)

So far as the Vancouver Olympics, I want them to be successful and see poo on Al Gore’s face again concerning the so-called “Global Waming”. :)
