THIS AFTERNOON: While the epic snow event cranks up for Washington and Baltimore, we are dealing with dreary weather here in Alabama, with low clouds, light rain, and some drizzle. Birmingham is at 49 degrees at 3:00, and we will fall slowly for the rest of this afternoon and tonight.

OUR WEEKEND: Tomorrow looks pretty raw, with clouds, some drizzle, and colder temperatures. Both the NAM and the GFS are printing a high of 45 degrees tomorrow, but considering the snow cover to the north, I expect we will hover in the low 40s all day. A brisk northwest wind will make it feel colder. Sunday will finally bring improving weather with a clearing sky and sunshine returning by afternoon. The high Sunday will be in the upper 40s.

NEXT WEEK: The next weather system rolling along in the southern branch of the jet stream will bring rain late Monday night and Tuesday, with some snow north of Alabama for states like Tennessee and Kentucky. This one should bring about 1/2 to 1 inch of rain.

Colder air follows that on Wednesday, and the fun and games begin late in the week with the next wave in the southern branch. While the GFS continues to struggle, the ECMWF shows a healthy storm with potential for snow over North Alabama, and rain for the southern half of the state. Needless to say, confidence is very low in a specific forecast this far in advance, but there is a very real possibility of winter weather mischief for somebody across the Deep South toward the end of next week. Stay tuned…

VOODOO LAND: The cold, unsettled pattern will continue through mid-month with a strongly negative Arctic Oscillation and active southern stream. Winter weather fans could very well have the day they are looking for before the month is over.

STORM ALERT 2010 IS COMING TO WALKER COUNTY: Our annual severe weather rolls along; our next stop will be on Thursday February 11 at Bevill State Community College in Sumiton. You can meet the ABC 33/40 Weather team, see some amazing Alabama weather stories, learn how to keep your family safe this tornado season, and win some cool stuff. The show begins at 7:00; be sure and get there early to get a good seat. See the entire tour schedule here!

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left.

LIVE CHAT: We are now offering a real time chat here on the blog… open blog comments will stay in place, of course, but this will allow a more immediate method of communication for weather geeks. We do have moderators posted over there, so be sure and play nice. Members of our weather team will be there from time to time to answer questions; we will post those times we are available here on the blog.

I had a great time today visiting with the Metro Sertoma Club, and the 1st graders at Brookwood Forest Elementary School. Be looking for those kids on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40 News!

Perfect weather to stay home where its warm and dry and be studying for classwork! And with no TV, even less distractions.

  2. Acid Reign Says:

…..I’m not staying home. It’s my night to take my wife out to celebrate Valentine’s Day! Avoids the crowds, and avoids the pricey “holiday” room rates. And we won’t have to worry about possible snow and ice disrupting our plans, either!

I beg, I plead, please, if there is anyone who can change this weather pattern or give us an early, temperate, spring, I will pay THEM top dollar!!! :D Notice I didn’t put an exact dollar amount on it. Hey; it’s the recession!
