Winter Weather Issues – NW Alabama

| February 8, 2010 @ 7:28 am | 3 Replies

NWS Huntsville has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Northwest Alabama… some late reports from the NWS IM session:

“Highway 20 in Central Heights (Lauderdale County) covered by ice & snow. Light accumulations occurring throughout the area, with several traffic accidents apparently reported.

We had a report of 1.5 inches of snow at Cherokee in Colbert County…most in a very short period of time

Would not be surprised if we meet winter storm warning criteria in NW AL…but for now we are staying with an advisory. We may need to extend the advisory in time or area later…or even potentially upgrade it.

Limestone county EMA reporting that bridges starting to freeze over near the EOC and US 72 is starting to freeze over near Clemente High School…

Reports of some slick spots in the Huntsville area now”

And… this note from Randy Coleman in Memphis:

Good Morning James,

“I just can’t seem to escape winter weather after moving from Milwaukee back home to Birmingham and now to Memphis. When I got back to Memphis from Birmingham late last night the prediction was for a rain/snow mix turning to rain. 8 hours later Memphis is a winter wonderland. Here at my office about a mile from the airport, we have 3” of snow but in my residential area of Germantown just east of Memphis we had about 4” when I left for work. Thank goodness for the relatively flat terrain here or it would have really been impossible to travel. Still, lots of accidents around the area. All schools are closed ( and none had made the call at bedtime since the prediction was no accumulation).”
