Early Afternoon in Chilly Alabama

| February 9, 2010 @ 1:40 pm | 2 Replies

Cold front at 1 o’clock this afternoon had advanced as far east as about the Fort Payne-Anniston-Alexander City line. The Birmingham temperature has dropped seven degrees in the last three hours or so.

Almost all the rain has gone away. There was a narrow area of light rain from about Anniston to east of Alexander City.

NW winds will be getting stronger as the afternoon goes on and it will be a raw afternoon to be outside.

SPOT REPORTS BASED ON 1 PM OFFICIAL OBSERVATIONS
Tuscaloosa…cloudy, 40, wind chill 32
Gadsden…cloudy, 43
Haleyville…cloudy, 37, wind chill 28
Birmingham…cloudy, 39, wind chill 31 (may be close to freezing by dark)
Huntsville…cloudy, 37, wind chill 28
Dothan…light rain, 54
Memphis…mostly sunny, 27, wind chill 17
Union City, Tenn.,…sunny, 23, wind chill 12
Albany, in south Georgia, a mild 60

Could still be a little light drizzle this afternoon too light to show on radar. Can’t rule out a few flakes of you-know-what.

FRIDAY SNOW EVENT
Models today have trended southward leaving less hope for snow lovers in North and Central Alabama. Better chance south. HOWEVER, it is early in the game, early in the first quarter, and models are known for flip-flopping this early in the game, so don’t throw in the towel this early.

HOW ABOUT THIS?
…..36 inches of snow still on the ground this morning at Mount Storm, West Va., and Aberdeen, Maryland.
…..38 inches on the ground at Fredericksburg, Va.
…..32 inches at Washington National Airport
…..7.5 inches of new snow fell overnight at Wynne, Ark.
…..This morning’s USA NWS Snow Survey shows 65.5% of the lower 48 with a blanket of snow. I believe that is the most so far this winter.
