Roads “Sheets of Ice”

| February 12, 2010 @ 8:36 pm | 10 Replies

We cannot emphasize how dangerous the roads have become across much of Alabama tonight.

John Talbot, one of our excellent Skywatchers, monitors emergency scanners across the area and reports that local Police, Fire and Emergency Responders have been slammed with calls as motor vehicle accidents have exploded in the last hour.

A FEW REPORTS
…Shades Crest Road is closed at Chapel road
…Vestavia PD has closed I-65 in their jurisdiction
…Vehicle overturned in ravine on Lakeshore Parkway
…Brookwood Hospital is on generator power after a car struck a light pole
…Numerous wrecks on Birmingham interstates still
…City of Oneonta has closed all streets
…Blount and Etowah Counties now have local area emergencies issued for hazardous road conditions

Please, please stay off the roads tonight and early Saturday. Snow, slush and water from today’s snow is now rapidly freezing as temperatures drop into the upper 20s across the area.
