* 90 was the water temperature 74 land miles south of Dauphin Island at midday. It was 86 in the Middle Gulf and the Eastern Gulf. We refer to that as the SST (Sea Surface Temperature) and those numbers are very warm for so early in the season. They are more typical of midsummer. Hurricanes and tropical storms love water like that as much as a kid loves ice cream.

* 239 is the number of high wind reports in the USA yesterday. A big majority of those were over the north half of Illinois, extreme Northern Indiana, Northern Ohio and Western Pennsylvania. Those numbers will be reduced somewhat because it is likely that there was more than one report of a high wind event.

* 81 was the highest temperature in Alaska yesterday at Ft. Yukon. That is the only weather station in Alaska ever to report 100 degrees and that 100 is still the highest on record for all of Alaska.

* 111 in Death Valley was the hottest in the USA yesterday. 28 was the coldest this morning at the western entrance to Yellowstone National Park.

* 100% is the percentage of Alabama that is still free of drought based on the latest drougt monitor report about 5 or 6 days ago.

* 76% of Alabama has adequate topsoil moisture and only 1% of the state is very short.

* 76% of the pasture and rangeland in Alabama is in good to excellent condition and 23% fair.

* 9.49 inches is the largest rain deficit so far this year in Alabama. That is at Russellville. The second biggesst deficit 7.74 inches at Union Springs.

* 80 below zero is the coldest temperature ever in Alaska. That was on January 23, 1971 at Prospect Creek.

* 2 below zero is the coldest ever in Florida at Tallahassee. That happened on February 13, 1899 during the (Grandfather) (Grandmother) (Great Grandfather) of all cold waves.

* 27 below zero is the coldest ever in Alabama on January 30, 1966 at New Market north of Huntsville. There was about 1 foot of snow on the ground at the time.

* 1 is where the State of Washington stands as being the safest place from lightning. Oregon is number 2 and California is number 3.

* 134 degrees is the hottest official temperature ever in the USA in Death Valley. But Lake Havasu, Arizona holds the record for the second hottest. They had 128 degrees.

* 240 is how many cloudy days experienced each year in Astoria, Oregon. That makes it the cloudiest city in the USA.

* 90% is the annual percent of possible sunshine at Yuma, Arizona, making it the sunniest city in the USA.

* 83 degrees is how much the temperature rose in only 12 hours at Granville, North Dakota on February 21, 1919. The temperature dropped from 33 below zero to 50 degrees above.
