SEPTEMBER OR AUGUST? Check out these 3:00 observations…

Tuscaloosa 100
Montgomery 99
Birmingham 97
Anniston 97
Gadsden 97

That 100 degree high in Tuscaloosa is a record; the old record for the date was 97 set on September 20, 1954.

No cooling showers showing up on radar, and the chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow and Wednesday will will remain tiny.

REST OF THE WEEK: We head back up into the mid to upper 90s, but we should see maximum temps drop about 5 degrees, down into the low 90s on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Each day should feature a good supply of sunshine.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: The 12Z GFS still brings in a little cooler down into the Deep South, but very slowly. The model is printing a high of 90 on Saturday, and 87 on Sunday. We figure we probably need to adjust these numbers up a bit due to the dry soil and recent heat wave. But, at least we move in the right direction. A few widely scattered showers or storms are possible Saturday with a surface front coming through, but moisture looks very limited and rain should not be especially widespread.

LONG RANGE: We are still looking at a pattern change late this month and into early October which should bring down some cooler air, but also set the stage for potential tropical issues in the Gulf of Mexico. The 12Z GFS brings a hurricane from the southern Gulf over toward Tampa Bay or Fort Myers, on the Florida West Coast. Something like this is certainly possible, if not likely. But, nobody now knows details.

TROPICS THIS AFTERNOON: Igor and Julia are on the way out, but the strong wave in the east Atlantic sure looks like a tropical depression to us. This should become Tropical Storm Lisa, and it is expected to meander out in the middle of nowhere for a while and seems to be no threat to land. More waves are seen moving off the coast of Africa in coming days.
