An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: A few scattered showers are in progress in the very unstable air over Alabama this afternoon… including some heavier ones moving through the Birmingham metro area (Jefferson/Shelby Counties). Other heavier showers are over Etowah and Cherokee Counties of Northeast Alabama, where some small hail is likely due to the very cold air aloft. We note the 500 mb temp at 12Z this morning was -14.5 degrees (C) over the Shelby County Airport. Temperatures range from only 60 at the Cullman Airport to 74 at Birmingham. Sure beats the 90s we dealt with last week.

TONIGHT: Showers fade this evening, and the sky will become clear. By daybreak tomorrow, most places will be in the 48 to 52 degree range with a light wind. Some of the colder valley locations could reach the mid 40s, a nice way to wrap up the month of September.

REST OF THE WEEK: Fantastic weather is the story, with sunny pleasant days and clear cool nights. The high tomorrow will be close to 77, followed by a high around 80 on Wednesday with sunshine in full supply both days. Dry weather is the story for Thursday and Friday.

WEEKEND PEEK: A fresh supply of cool, dry air arrives for Saturday and Sunday, meaning more delightful weather. Highs in the 70s, and lows well down in the 50s. In fact, upper 40s seem likely early Sunday, and some spots might have a hard time getting out of the upper 60s Sunday with a nice north breeze.

TROPICS: A disturbance over the Northwest Caribbean could become Tropical Storm Nicole in coming days; this one will head northeast, toward South Florida, and a track parallel to the East Coast of the U.S. It could be close enough to bring wind and rain to East North Carolina by Wednesday or Thursday. And, in the longer range, the GFS shows another system like that this weekend, which will follow a similar path (Otto?). No evidence of any tropical trouble for the Central Gulf Coast in the short term.
