Stormy Day In Arizona…

“Mr. Spann,

I wanted to send you some pictures I took of my trip to Southern California last week. I was out there doing some vehicle dynamic testing before the Sprint Cup race in Fontana. I actually drove into, and somewhat through that initial storm that dumped a lot of hail west of Flagstaff, Arizona on Monday (October 4th). I could see the clouds off in the distance to my right (south of Seligman, Az) and immediately searched for an exit since I knew hail had to be part of this storm. I got lucky because the Seligman exit (Exit 121) was the last for several miles. So, myself and about 5 other vehicles, including a pack of motorcyclist, camped out under a Chevron gas station canopy for around half an hour. The storm produced a lot of rain in a short period, but the hail was incredible to see, especially for a kid who has lived in Tuscaloosa for much of his life!

As bad and dangerous as the storm was I still had to snap a few pictures of it with my iPhone. It was exactly like driving on ice when I began to head back out onto I-40W. I’ve got a Nissan 350z (two door RWD sports car), so it was a challenge to keep it pointed straight ahead. I was just amazed at how much hail was dumped in about half an hour! It was intense! The coolest thing happened when I got going again. I was searching for a weather report by scanning radio stations and suddenly I came across this voice I had heard for years and years. It was yours giving a daily weather report for a station out in Arizona. Being as far from home as I was it was defiantly nice to come across a voice I grew up to.

Anyway, here are some pictures. I remember seeing the Camping World RV bussiness that got hit a few days later in Bellemont, Arizona. I remember it because they sponsor the Nascar Truck Series, and it was the first I had ever come across. So to see where the tornado destructed it on the Weather Channel a few days later was a slight scare for myself.”
