THIS AFTERNOON: A very nice warm-up today after the coldest morning so far this season (scroll down for a list of lows from J.B.). Anniston has hit the big “50”, while most other places are in the mid to upper 40s with a good supply of sunshine through scattered high clouds.

TOMORROW: The warming trend continues, with everybody rising up into the low to mid 50s. The sky will be partly sunny, with the clouds becoming thicker tomorrow night in advance of the next storm system to impact Alabama.

THE WEEKEND: Rain could move into Northwest Alabama Saturday morning, but it still looks like the bulk of the rain will come from about 2:00 p.m. Saturday until 2:00 a.m. Sunday. We are projecting rain amounts of around 1/2 inch, and there might be some thunder in spots with very good dynamic forcing. The lack of instability should prevent any severe weather issues… although we do note SPC has low end 5 percent severe weather possibilities for parts of Alabama and Mississippi. Just hard to get any kind of severe weather threat going with only modified Continental Polar air in place.

TURNING COLD AGAIN ON SUNDAY: As the rain moves out, much colder air invades Alabama Sunday. The 12Z runs of the GFS and the ECMWF continue to suggest the surface low will be too far north for any significant snow shower activity here on Sunday; the weather would just be windy and sharply colder with temperatures dropping into the 30s. We do note the NAM shows a little better chance of some snow early Sunday for the northern third of the state, but thermal values are still rather marginal while decent moisture is in place. For now we will just mention the chance of a few flurries with no accumulation; the only hope for getting the ground white Sunday morning, for now, seems to be across the high elevations of Northeast Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: Despite the return of sunshine, we will have a hard time rising above the freezing mark Monday, and our coldest morning will come early Tuesday, with temperatures will reach the 13-19 degree range. The colder spots have a very real chance of reaching the single digits at daybreak Tuesday. A warming trend begins Tuesday afternoon… we will be in the 50s by Wednesday, and the GFS continues to hint at some scattered light rain by Wednesday and Thursday.

VOODOO LAND: Not much model consistency in the 7-15 day time period, which in itself is not very unusual. But, the pattern continues to suggest a cold shot every 4-5 days. Too early to determine if the weather will be cold at Christmas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
