Early Afternoon in Alabama

| 9:38 am December 14, 2010 | Comments (15)

The sun was shinning over most of Alabama very early this afternoon. A welcome relief when compared to our recent weather.

However, it is still quite cold. Temperatures were only in the mid 20s across much of the Tennessee Valley. However, the thermometer has fought its way to just above freezing across Central Alabama including the Tuscaloosa-Birmingham-Anniston areas.

The entire state was a deep freeze overnight, well below freezing all the way to the coast. The coldest reported in the state was a low of 6 above between Hytop and Skyline on the higher terrain of NE Alabama. (Thanks to Mike Wilhelm for that report)

The NWS in Huntsville has a Winter Weather Advisory posted for tomorrow over Extreme North Alabama. Includes all of the Tennessee Valley and counties as far south as Cullman. For a possible mix of light, sleet, freezing rain or snow.

We will try to zoom in on that potential when we post our Afternoon Edition around 2:30 or so this afternoon.

Lets look at some morning lows not only in Alabama but some other areas also:

J.B. ELLIOTT …..Thank you for providing me with so many weather memories and all of the time you have served notice of warning to millions of people all over Alabama…THANK YOU, MR ELLIOTT

  2. Dave says:

Had 12 degrees at 5:30AM here, Bibbville area of North Bibb County

  3. J.B. Elliott says:

    Roy,
That is one of the nicest compliments I have ever received. I deeply appreciate it! It has been a long, long haul and there has been many, many changes. If you had mentioned the word “doppler” to me in 1957, I would have thought you meant something medical!

  4. Mike Wilhelm says:

The coldest I have found was at the station between Hytop and Skyline that reported 6.3. http://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/meso_base.cgi?stn=HTPA1

I have a quick question! I teach 5th grade at Oakman Elementary. We are supposed to go on a field trip tomorrow, and we are trying to decide if it will be safe to travel tomorrow. What do you think? We are traveling to Birmingham, and we should be back on the road home at around 1:30. Should we cancel?

  6. nathan says:

wow its 31 outside and it feels like 55 getting used to the cold i guess

  7. Matt Padgett says:

Low of 13 here in Moody this morning.

  8. Matt Padgett says:

    Hello J.B.,

Have there been any reports from Mt.Cheaha? Just wondering if the sky cam will be back up. Have a good day.

  9. J.B Elliott says:

Jessica…we can give you a more definitive answer later this afternoon when we finish the new forecasts. We do expect below freezing temperatures again tonight but we thunk the BHM temperature will slowly rise to 38-40 during the day and hang steady. At this time, this does not look like a significant wintry event for the BHM area,

  10. J.B Elliott says:

I forgot to ask…when is the latest you could cancel?

  11. Ashley says:

What do you think for the northern part of Calhoun county in East Al? We have several activities planned for tomorrow and are trying to decide how to adjust our schedule. Thanks for all the hard work! Praying for just RAIN! But, a nice snow would be nice.

  12. t.williams says:

I was wondering about the curry/arley area in walker county…

  13. J.B Elliott says:

NOTE TO JESSICA, ASHLEY AND T.WILLIAMS…Wish we could give you a specific answer but very difficult to do right now. I would suggest check in first thing tomorrow for another weather check. We believe the light freezing rain will start more to the north, even the extreme north. However NWS has Tuscaloosa/Jefferson/Shelby included.

Regardless, the scattered light rain could still cause some patchy ice even with the temperature 2 or 3 degrees above freezing, That is because the infrastructure is very cold (bridges, overpasses, elevated roadways) and at first those could be colder than the surrounding air and the rain could freeze on impact, Don’t think that will be a lot of that.

  14. Ashley says:

Thanks! What’s the thinking on Saturday’s storm? Thought the temps were too warm.

  15. t.williams says:

    Thank You!!!
