Ice Storm Threat is Increasing

Warmer air aloft is a great concern for us here in Central Alabama as it increases the possibility of a dangerous ice storm.

Already seeing reports of iced bridges in Sumter County Alabama and numerous accidents in Meridian. Conditions will continue to deteriorate over West Central Alabama this afternoon, spreading northeast with time. The precipitation could reach the Birmingham area as early as mid-afternoon.

The sleet and freezing rain could transition over to snow for a few hours this evening as evaporative cooling occurs, but it very well could switch back to all freezing rain later tonight in the I-20 corridor, creating a potentially disastrous ice storm situation. Please take a moment to assess your readiness for an extended power outages that could occur.

Tim is preparing a new video that will be up soon trying to sort out all the science of this situation.

Here is a great resource from Alabama Power.
