Rain Ending Soon

| March 15, 2011 @ 3:03 am | Reply

This is one of those weeks where a lot more folks than normal are sleeping in; however, there are quite a lot of people leaving for long trips in the wee hours of the morning, so I thought I’d put together a quick update on the rain situation.

Firstly, it’s almost over for Birmingham and Tuscaloosa; you can expect a few spots of light rain and drizzle through 6 AM if you are traveling west on I-20, southbound to New Orleans or northwestward to the Memphis area. It will be a lot cooler today underneath a thick deck of clouds over much of Tennessee, northern Alabama, and northern Mississippi! Highs will struggle to get above 50º in places like Memphis, Muscle Shoals, Tupelo, and Huntsville.

Next, to the east, rain will end completely in eastern Alabama by 10 AM; some spots of drizzle are still possible through midday around Anniston and Gadsden as well as down US 431 & US 231 between Montgomery and the Florida beaches. In Atlanta, light rain will linger through early afternoon, so east-bound travel is going to be a little wet at times; it will not be a “gully washer” the entire trip, though! No heavy storms are expected in Georgia as this system passes on east of Alabama.

Just like in Alabama, it will be a lot cooler to the east today as well! Daytime temperatures will hover in the 50s and 60s from Atlanta north to Chattanooga, but in the Smokies it will be downright chilly: highs in the 40s and lower 50s with low clouds, fog, and showers.

The good news is that this is a one-day deal. The messy weather ends tonight as clouds slowly dissipate, and Wednesday will start a very nice trend for the entire region! We are looking at a rebound to the mid-60s to lower 70s with a partly sunny sky tomorrow, and Thursday and Friday couldn’t be better as temperatures warm into the upper 70s and lower 80s under a sunny sky over the entire region.
