An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

The wave train will roll along through all of next week, meaning active and changeable weather for Alabama and the Deep South. Strap in and enjoy the ride…

THE WEEKEND: Still looks like the main window for rain comes from midnight tomorrow night through noon on Sunday. The 12Z GFS continues the trend of reducing the amount of rain we can expect… sure looks like the average total will be closer to one-quarter of an inch. That has been the way it has gone for much of the year.

Tomorrow will be mostly dry and mild… a great day for the Papajohns.com Bowl at Legion Field between Southern Miss and Cincinnati. Sunday, as the rain moves out, colder air will drop into Alabama. Both the NAM and the GFS are now colder; both models hint that we won’t get out of the 40s on Sunday… about 20 degrees colder than what we expect tomorrow.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: Monday will be dry and cool with temperatures just where they should be for this time of the year…. around 30 at daybreak, with a high in the mid 50s. To the west, a strong upper trough will set up over the Southwest U.S. on Monday, and shoot a little piece of energy out that will pass just north of here on Christmas Day. That will bring some clouds on Tuesday, and maybe a little light rain by afternoon. But, much of Christmas Day looks cool and dry.

The main part of the upper trough rotates through here on Wednesday of next week, and the 12Z GFS even suggests a chance of strong thunderstorms with some good rain amounts. Then, a similar system shows up on Friday December 28. But, model madness is the story, and all global models (GFS, GEM, ECMWF, JMA, etc) are having a really hard time handling this wave train.

VOODOO COUNTRY: Check out the video to see how the 12Z GFS handles our weather for New Years Day. Big time cold. But, other runs have looked mild and wet. You might as well flip a coin at this point… we won’t even try. Changeable is the word into early January.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 30 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. You can even listen here on the blog; look for the player on the top left. We will post show number 100 Sunday night… be sure and listen if you get the chance.

WEATHER PARTY: Get all the latest weather news over on our sister site, WeatherParty.com. Be sure and register while you are there; you can submit stories and vote on them to determine what is published on the front page. This is a great way to find the latest weather-related news stories.

I will be away next week on vacation… Brian Peters will handle the Weather Xtreme video, and we will be on a holiday schedule, meaning one video per day. Thanks to Brian, J.B., Bill Murray, and Ashley Brand for covering duties next week; a little down time is good for the soul. My days are great fun, but they are long and sleep is always in short supply. I hope you and your famile enjoy God’s richest blessings this Christmas!
