Cordova tornado video

| 4:11 pm April 28, 2011 | Comments (17)

Brian Peters and I did something we never encourage anyone to do…we punched the core of the storm moving SE on I-22, racing the tornado that was moving NE toward Cordova.  We made it south of the tornado track and filmed it.  There were actually two tornadoes initially, the main one underneath the massive wall cloud, and a second one on the flanking line of the storm to the SW (indicative of the extreme shear we had yesterday).  This tornado likely hit Cordova shortly after this film stops.

Haven’t been home too long from helping with the Search and Rescue in Calhoun County, over in Webster’s chapel and Ohatchee. All I can say is wow. You see the damages on pictures and you see it, but doesn’t really phase you, not until you see it in person. I was just amazed.

  2. Mike Wilhelm says:

That was awesome, Tim. I like the banter between you and Brian!

  3. Dr. Tim Coleman says:

I will be going out to survey damage tomorrow in Hueytown/Pleasant Grove/Smithfield. I have never seen EF4 nor EF5 damage in person, and frankly I don’t know what to expect emotionally.

  4. Renee' Hurd says:

Praying for you, Tim. Thanks so much for all you do/are doing. And you too, Mike.

  5. Stacy says:

i’ve heard the damage there is just terrible. a friend that lives in that area spent much of the night last night helping tag bodies.

i can only hope some of the people on this message board that always say “not gonna happen in Birmingham/Jefferson County” have learned a very valuable, life saying lesson.

  6. Stacy says:

well that should be life SAVING lesson….it seems like days ago that all this happened, not just like last night.

  7. Jason in Helena says:

Incredible video, thanks for being there to report what was happening as it happened; y’all’s report undoubtedly saved lives. I remember hearing the other end of this conversation live on TV as James was telling Brian to get out of there as the tornado approached!

Dr. Coleman, you mentioned you were participating in storm surveys tomorrow; I’ve heard there are only a handful of people in the country who are designated by the NWS to officially rate a tornado an EF-5, are you one of those experts? Presumably most of them will be in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia tomorrow.

By the way….who’s pickup truck got hammered by hail?

  8. Justin (Springville) says:

Tim Marshall will be here in the state as well surveying the damage. This is via his Facebook post.

  9. David says:

Just to show how powerful the supercells were. I live in Lyerly Georgia in Chattooga County. We have found debris from Tuscaloosa here over 200 miles nw. One of the items was a bank statement addressed to someone in Tuscaloosa. Incredible and very sobering.

  10. Stacy says:

isn’t it strange that PAPER from miles and miles away like that, made it in once piece in many cases?

a building destroyed, but paper, not torn.

  11. David says:

We also found siding, cloth, pics and insulation. We shredded the bank statement to prevent problems for the owner.

  12. chris whitmer says:

Does anyone know if a tornado hit summiton, or empire, AL? My family lives there and at this point i dont know if one hit there, any info?

  13. Matthew Lowery says:

This tornado did hit Cordova! It tore through the whole town it hit the Piggy Wiggy there in town and kill at this point as far as I know 10 people!

  14. Holly Garner says:

My friends have posted 13 in Cordova. It’s my precious hometown. Empire and Sumiton are fine as far as I’ve heard.

  15. Mary says:

Chris, I live in Sumiton and it was not hit that I could tell. I haven’t heard anything about Empire so I’m assuming that it was also not hit. Argo up the road was hit pretty bad. As of this morning the area still didn’t have power from about the county line towards Jasper. I hope this helps.

  16. Patty Maher says:

Could anyone please help me find out if my good friend Regina Hyche from Cordova is ok? I live in South Dakota and have been trying every way I can think of to find out about her.

  17. Renee Sides says:

Patty Maher – I live on River Road in Cordova. If you can tell me approximately where Regina lives, I will try to find out for you
