HEATING UP: No rain for Alabama through mid-week, with afternoons getting warmer. Most communities are in the mid to upper 80s at 3:00; Montgomery leads the way with 90 degrees there. These values are about 3 degrees below the model output statistics (MOS) coming from the computer models, so we will probably need to tone highs down just a bit tomorrow and Wednesday. Still, most places will wind up in the 87-91 degree range with a good supply of sunshine. Warm air aloft associated with the strong upper ridge over the state should keep us rain-free, although we do note some strong storms could form east of Alabama tomorrow afternoon over the Carolinas, where SPC has a “slight” risk of severe weather in place.

LATER IN THE WEEK: The big upper trough out west begins to lift out Thursday, and the ridge over Alabama begins to flatten. Then, on Friday, a cold front moves into the state and we will bring in a chance of showers and thunderstorms. For now we do not expect any significant chance of severe weather, and rain amounts should be 1/2 inch or less. We also cool down with a high in the low 80s.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: A deep upper low forms north of Alabama on Saturday, and with the surface front becoming nearly stationary, we will continue to mention just the chance of a shower or two on Saturday, but much of the day should be dry with a few intervals of sunshine. The upper low drops south, and energy rotating through the trough will bring a chance of showers on Sunday. If you have something planned outside this weekend, it won’t rain all day Saturday and Sunday, but just be aware a shower is possible, more likely Sunday. The weather will be cooler with a high in the 70s both days.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: We might have to leave some risk of showers in the forecast for Monday, but the middle of next week looks warmer and drier as the upper trough lifts out. And, in the long range, still no sign of any major severe weather issues for Alabama through late May, which is a very good thing. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Richard Okulski, WCM of the Memphis NWS office, will be our guest… they, of course, are experiencing record flooding on the Mississippi River right now. And, we will still have plenty to say about 4/27. You can listen/watch live via uStream here.
