RIDGE RULES: Not much change in our weather is expected through tomorrow; mostly sunny days and fair nights with afternoon highs not too far from 90, along with dewpoints well into the 60s making for summer-like, muggy days. Storms should fire later today west, north, and east of Alabama, but the warm air aloft associated with the ridge should keep us high and dry.

TO THE WEST: SPC has defined a moderate risk of severe weather tomorrow for parts of Oklahoma and Kansas, especially along and just west of I-35, and Thursday a standard “slight” risk is up all the way from the Rio Grande to the Upper Midwest. The higher severe weather probabilities on Thursday are centered over Arkansas.

HERE IN ALABAMA: The ridge will begin to break down Thursday, but for now it looks like the weather will stay dry. A shower might creep into the state late in the day or Thursday night, but clearly the best chance of rain comes Friday.

The good news is that the chance of any organized severe weather in Alabama looks small. If there is any potential issue, it might be hail with the stronger storms due to colder air aloft advecting into the state, but wind profiles do not support tornado development. And, for now we are projecting rain amounts of 1/2 inch or less on Friday with the showers and storms that form.

UNSETTLED WEEKEND: A deep upper low north of Alabama will drift slowly southward over the weekend, bringing cooler and somewhat unsettled weather. We will have to keep a chance of showers, and maybe even a thunderstorm, going on Saturday and Sunday. Still, we don’t expect an “all-day” kind of rain, and the sun might peek out at times. Just understand if you have something going on outdoors this weekend you could very well have to dodge raindrops at times. Highs over the weekend should drop into the 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Showers will remain possible Monday, and maybe even Tuesday as the upper low hangs around the Deep South. The weather will be cooler than average with highs in the 70s. Drier and warmer weather follows for the latter half of the week.

For long range ideas… see the Weather Xtreme video. But, the good news is that we still don’t see any classic severe weather setup for Alabama for the next 15 days.
