Another Very Cool Day In May

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

RAW, CHILLY DAY: The weather won’t change much across Alabama today as a deep upper low (5580 meters at 500 mb) moves right over North Alabama. You might see some sun at times, but the day will be generally overcast with temperatures having a very hard time getting to the 60 degree mark. Keep in mind the average high for May 16 is 81 degrees, so most places will see a high today 20 degrees below average for this time of the year.

And, like yesterday, we might have a little scattered light rain or drizzle to deal with, especially this morning. Nothing really significant.

TOMORROW: The upper low/trough slowly moves away from Alabama, and we will be more optimistic about the sky condition with a partly sunny day tomorrow, but no doubt clouds could hang tough over Northeast Alabama much of the day… places like Gadsden, Fort Payne, Collinsville, Gaylesville, and Scottsboro could remain mostly cloudy. We should reach the mid to upper 60s tomorrow, still well below where we should be.

WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY: A warming trend headlines the latter half of the week as an upper ridge begins to build across the Gulf Coast states. We reach the low 70s Wednesday, low 80s Thursday, and mid to upper 80s Friday with a good supply of sunshine each day.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Models continue to trend drier. Watch the Weather Xtreme video, and you will see that the 00Z GFS maintains the upper ridge over Alabama, meaning no real serious rain threat for Saturday and Sunday. I guess we might consider some risk of isolated afternoon storms Sunday with an increase in low level moisture, but nothing really organized. And, the weekend will be warm with highs in the 80s… quite a contrast to the weekend we just wrapped up.

LONG RANGE: Once again no sign of any really serious severe weather issues for the rest of May, although we might want to monitor the May 25-26 time frame when a decent upper trough approaches the state; that might be our next really decent rain event. The storm track shifts well to the north of Alabama by the end of the month. Again, see the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas.
