The upper ridge continues to be the main player in the weather pattern over the Southeast US and it is not expected to go away any time soon. The high at Birmingham yesterday was 95 degrees and with the record high for today at 94, there is a reasonably good expectation that we will tie or break that record. So be watching the temperatures this afternoon in the 2 to 4 pm time frame, and it is likely May 31, 2011, will go in the record books once again with a high around 96.

Summer-like monotony is the word for the next week or so as the upper ridge remains the primary feature in the overall weather pattern affecting the Southeast US. While the upper ridge does move slightly and does weaken slightly, it essentially maintains a strangle hold on the eastern half of the country especially the Southeast US keeping us hot and dry. I do not believe we will see many showers through Friday. Starting Saturday and continuing into next week, we will probably see better conditions for air mass showers. This does not mean that an isolated shower will not occur, but I believe they will be so few and far between that it is hardly worth mentioning them since the vast majority of us will remain dry.

QPF forecasts from HPC show better chance for some rain into the weekend, however, I am of the opinion that they have over done the amounts and coverage of those amounts since the character of the rain will be showers meaning spotty rainfall amounts at best.

Hurricane season begins tomorrow and the tropical Atlantic is quiet. Some cloudiness across the Caribbean Sea and the southern Atlantic Ocean but no signs of any disturbances at this time.

GFS again introduces the potential for the ridge to breakdown over the eastern half of the country. Problem is that this solution has been suggested and has not happened, so I’m hopeful but certainly not overly optimistic that it will happen.
