Sun is breaking through the clouds in Inverness…………

  2. Fred Gossage Says:

SPC mentions potential for strong/long-track tornadoes with discrete storms. I smell a Particularly Dangerous Situation Tornado Watch today….

  3. Patrick Says:

Sun popping in and out in downtown bham.

  4. jon Says:

clouds are breaking up in huntsville.

i agree about a possible PDS watch

  5. Greg Says:

I can’t get the live radar feed. Keep getting socket error. Any help????

  6. Kevin Says:

The temp here in Gadsden has risen pretty nicely in a short period of time. Going to be an interesting day. :)

  7. Andy M Says:

These events usually just fizzle out into nothing. Seems like the bigger deal folks make of it… the less happens (which is good for everyone, actually)

But you know what? I just want the rain!! I went to Lay lake the other day and it was looking SO MUCH healthier! I think a 1 to 2 inch rain in the coosa river watershed would restore Lay to nearly full pool! So refreshing to see after such a disastrous summer.

As I don’t have class until 12:30 today, I’m sitting at one of the desks in my room watching the sky outside. It’s relatively cloudy here in Florence, at least on the UNA campus, and I haven’t seen much in the way of sun, which helps me relax a bit…all of the school systems in Lauderdale and Colbert counties except Florence City are closing early–11:30 being the earliest closing and 12:30 being the latest. According to the Weather Channel, the temperature here in the Shoals area is currently 67 degrees, up from 64 at around 9:30.

Due to my having prior plans for this afternoon, I signed up for my county’s e-Warn through WHNT in Huntsville for my cell phone so I can keep alerted.

Hope you all are well and everyone stay alert today!

  9. SCOTT!!! Says:

I don’t think the moderate upgrade was warranted..

  10. Joseph Says:

Andy, never take weather for granted…that is what usually gets people killed!!
Assuming that severe weather will fizzle will only cause people to be less cautious…which could lead to lose of life… Every severe weather situation should be taken seriously…I live in a town that was blown away many years ago..and I lost several friends…. Be cautious!!!

  11. Joseph Says:

Scott, The National Weather Service knows exactly what they are doing…Anytime all these conditions come together like they are today…it is very warranted…look at the past??? (Carbon Hill, Tuscaloosa,Enterprise,Guin,Huntsville,…need I say more)

  12. Jennifer Says:

It’s ominous out. I hope the sun stays behind the clouds and hopeful that we’ll have rain to cool things a bit. I see a few warnings..maybe heavy rain and wind.

  13. SCOTT!!! Says:

Joseph.. the only reason people assume that is because MOST of the time it DOES fizzle out.

Tuscaloosa.. Enterprise .. while horribly tragic.. are rare instances.

Im not saying dont be alert. .. but this isnt something like a springtime situation where a moderate risk might make me go.. “ok.. wow.. lets be scared now”.

  14. Patrick Says:

Dewpoint up to 63. At this point, not sure is school closings are warranted. Only seen that happen in the rare cases of high risk alerts or when a PDS is issued.

  15. SCOTT!!! Says:

Im in Jasper.. I haven’t heard anything about school closings

  16. Michelle Says:

Hamilton is very windy and cloudy. Several schools have closed in the surrounding area Walker and Frankin county schools are closing at 12:00.

  17. Patrick Says:

Referring to the school closings in Florence Nicole was speaking of.

  18. Joseph Says:

    Walker County Schools are closing

  19. laura Says:

Jasper city and Walker County schools closed…will Birmimgham and area schools follow??

  20. Amber in Roanoke Says:

Scott, I don’t recall anyone saying we need to be scared, just cautious.
I live in East AL where usually the weather dies out before getting here but on days like today I do make an effort to keep a watchful eye on what is going on all over AL.
Just because severe weather doesn’t affect us doesn’t mean there won’t be any severe stuff.
I really feel for those in the major weather threat areas today. Stay safe all !!!

  21. CARRIE Says:

Walker County schools and Jasper City schools closing at noon today.

  22. SCOTT!!! Says:

    Just heard..

I don’t think the school closings are warranted..

My cats are going crazy.. BAD SIGN??

  23. Andy M Says:

Joseph, I take every tornado warning seriously. The simple fact is, though, that for the overwhelming majority of tornado warnings, nothing happens..which, as I said earlier…is a very good thing. However, that 1 in 20 or 1 in 50 or whatever is serious, of course I realize that.

  24. SCOTT!!! Says:

    Andy.. exactly.

The equipment ( i think for the better) has become so sensitive that it picks up any kind of rotation wither on the ground or “lifted” (if thats the correct term)

If every tornado warning actually had a funnel that hit the ground the south east and Texas/Oklahoma would look like Arrakis.

Stay alert.. and WE NEED RAIN!!!
