The day is new but the forecast is old. We remain in a bit of a weakness in the upper air pattern, so scattered showers and thunderstorms are going to continue today and Thursday. That upper air weakness or troughiness gets shoved off to the east on Friday and through the weekend as the upper ridge builds into the Southeast US from the west. This is likely to put a damper on thunderstorm development in terms of reducing somewhat the number of showers and the coverage of those showers. But still, the heat and humidity will mean that we continue to mention a small chance of afternoon storms into the foreseeable future. Be sure to remain vigilant about the danger of lightning that comes with all of these storms.

Along with the showers will come the heat. We will probably see a slight decrease in the overall high temperatures today thanks to a fairly significant coverage of showers during the afternoon and evening. These showers increased the soil moisture, so our highs will probably reach into the lower 90s at most spots with a few edging into the mid 90s. But as the upper ridge builds back into the area over the weekend and into next week, look for mid and upper 90 highs to return.

Rain will continue to be spotty, however, if you get under the core of any of the storms, there is a potential for one inch of rain. Also a potential for a few of the storms to be severe with damaging wind the biggest threat. SPC has focused on the Carolinas and a section just east of the Rockies for a slight risk of severe storms today. The slight risk shifts back to the Northwest US on Day 2 but the potential for thunderstorms covers a large portion of the country.

Tropics remain quiet as we get into the second month of the 2011 hurricane season. Be sure to catch the latest edition of WeatherBrains featuring a chat with Dr. Chris Landsea from the National Hurricane Center.
