MOSTLY SUNNY: The weather won’t change too much today across our state. Understand there is always some risk of a shower or storm on a summer day around here, but the ones that form this afternoon should be pretty isolated. Temperatures reach the low to mid 90s this afternoon, about average for mid July in Alabama. The really nasty heat remains northwest of here, over states like Missouri and Kansas.

REST OF THE WEEK: We expect increasing moisture levels tomorrow through Friday, and with a slight reduction in the strength of the upper ridge, there should be a slow increase in the number of scattered showers and storms each afternoon. Any one spot stands about a one in three chance of getting wet each afternoon. Highs remain in the low to mid 90s.

THE WEEKEND: Pretty much the same formula. Morning sunshine, followed by scattered showers and thunderstorms each afternoon. No way we can tell you exactly when and where it will rain… the placement and coverage afternoon storms on a summer day in Alabama remains a great mystery, driven by mesoscale processes you simply can’t identify far in advance. Highs will be in the 89-94 degree range over the weekend.

The ridge will weaken more early next week, which should open the door for scattered to numerous showers and storms Monday and Tuesday. Highs on these days could drop into the upper 80s. Sure looks like July is going to be cooler than June.

BRET: The tropical storm in the Atlantic, well east of Florida, seems to be less organized this morning thanks to dry air entering the system from the west. Top winds are near 50 mph, and Bret is still expected to move northeast, between Bermuda and the coast of the Carolinas, without impacting any land area, and without becoming a hurricane. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet.

AT THE BEACH: Look for mostly sunny days and fair nights along the Central Gulf Coast through Friday from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. The high along the immediate coast will be close to 90, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab last night was 83 degrees.
