An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player below, and on iTunes…

Temperatures will drop quickly this evening with clear sky, light wind, and polar air in place. We should be in the low 30s by 10:00 or so, but after midnight a south wind will begin the WAA process (warm air advection), and temperatures should slowly rise in advance of the next storm system headed our way.

Tomorrow will be a mostly cloudy and breezy day, rain should enter West Alabama by mid-afternoon, becoming widespread tomorrow night. Despite the very impressive dynamics with the storm system, the lack of instability should keep the severe weather threat limited to the immediate Gulf coast region. Some beneficial rain is possible… the NAM is printing 0.70″ for Birmingham, while the GFS is wetter with 1.03″. Most of the rain should come from about 4:00 p.m. tomorrow through 4:00 a.m. Friday.

Friday will feature a clearing sky with another shot of cooler air from the north.

THE WEEKEND: Saturday will be a sunny day with a nice warm-up; we will begin the day a little below freezing, but warm to near 60 degrees. Then Sunday, moisture will begin to increase, and we will probably need to mention the chance of an afternoon shower, mainly for the northwest part of the state.

ACTIVE WEATHER ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY: A warm front should push through Central Alabama on Monday; that will bring a good chance of showers, and temperatures in the low 70s south of the front. Then, another strong system will blow in here with a nice round of showers and storms by Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night. There will be a good deal of surface based instability is the GFS is correct, and we might have a severe weather threat. Cooler and drier air will follow by Wednesday.

STORM ALERT 2008: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama begins tomorrow night! Our first stop will at Oak Grove High School tomorrow night at 7:00; from there will have shows in Anniston, Northport, Lineville, and Moody.
