THIS MORNING: Love this time of the year with cool mornings and warm afternoons along with low humidity. Coolest places at 5:00 were Gadsden and Valley Head with a refreshing 55 degrees. But, this afternoon, most places will top out in the 87-90 degree range with a good supply of sunshine.

Tomorrow will be similar kind of day, but we might consider some risk of a shower late in the day or tomorrow night over the northern counties of the state as a cold front approaches.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: The front will drift through Thursday, with a mix of sun and clouds and the chance of scattered showers and possibly a thunderstorm. The rain won’t be especially heavy or widespread; most places will see only one-half inch or less.

The weather Friday will depend on where the front stalls as the upper support stays well to the north. We will hang on to some risk of a shower Friday, especially south of I-20, but I don’t think it rains much. And, the day will be cooler with a high in the 78-81 degree range.

WEEKEND FORECAST: We have mentioned a small risk of a shower Saturday and Sunday with the old front slowly dissipating, but I honestly think most of the weekend will be dry and pleasant. More than likely there will be a pretty sharp temperature gradient; East Alabama will be cooler with come type of weak CAD setup (cold air damming)… highs in Anniston and Gadsden could be only in the 70s over the weekend, while West Alabama sees low to mid 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see potential for a decent early fall cold front Tuesday or Wednesday, with a nice round of showers and storms followed by cooler air.

MARIA: The lone tropical system on the board is expected to remain at tropical storm strength as it recurves into the open Atlantic in coming days well east of the U.S. The system could be close to Bermuda by Thursday morning… see the Weather Xtreme video for more details. A new wave is emerging now off the coast of Africa, and the Gulf of Mexico is mostly clear.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode we recorded last night.

ANYBODY REMEMBER? On this date in 1979 Hurricane Frederic had just made landfall on the Alabama Gulf Coast. It was my first week on the air as a TV weather anchor in Birmingham… I was live on the coast via telephone (no satellite trucks back then!). Read about this major hurricane from the NWS in Mobile here.
