Warm With Occasional Showers

THIS MORNING: Radar early this morning shows scattered areas of rain across our state; showers are generally moving to the north/northeast in a very moist airmass across Alabama.

MID-WEEK: The weather continues to look warm and unsettled through Thursday, with highs in the 80s along with occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm or two. Parts of West Alabama received over one inch of rain last night, and additional rain amounts of 1 to 2 inches are likely through Thursday night. Between the showers the sun should pop out at times, and with dew points well in the 60s the humidity will be fairly high. Just about impossible to be really specific about the timing of the showers through mid-week, but they could some at just about any hour of the day or night.

FRIDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Actually a somewhat challenging forecast. The basic idea remains the same; a cold front is due in here Friday morning, and we will forecast a clearing sky during the day Friday with cooler temperatures and lower humidity. We do note the 00Z GFS is slower with the front, hinting that some showers could linger into early Friday morning. And, with a deep upper low to the north, the clearing process could be slow.

Saturday continues to look dry. The 00Z GFS is much warmer, showing highs in the mid 80s, but that doesn’t make much sense with the projected low level thickness values, and we will keep the high in the upper 70s for now. The sky should be partly to mostly sunny as a decent dry slot is over the state.

Most global model runs are now showing a lobe of energy rotating through Alabama Sunday, coming around the upper low to the north. Accordingly, I sure think we will need to bring in some risk of showers Sunday, especially during the afternoon, in response to this. The high should be close to 80 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Seems like a few showers are still possible Monday (see the Weather Xtreme video for details), followed by drier air by mid-week.

TROPICS: The disturbance over the Central Atlantic is expected to become Tropical Storm Ophelia in coming days as it moves to the west. Models have shifted a bit to the right, and with the deep upper low/trough over the eastern U.S. early next week, it looks more and more like this will be a good candidate to recurve over the open Atlantic without bothering the U.S. Of course, this is not carved in stone at this point. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.
