THIS AFTERNOON: A well defined surface front is across North-Central Alabama at mid-afternoon. At 3:00, Haleyville in Winston County (north of the front) was reporting only 67 degrees, while Montgomery (south of the front) was at 89. A band of showers is along the front; a few thunderstorms are involved over Cherokee and DeKalb Counties of Northeast Alabama, and in West Alabama from near Moundville down to York. Severe weather is unlikely due to limited instability and shear values. The showers will end this evening as the front drifts to the south.

The sky will become mostly fair late tonight, and most places will be in the 50s early tomorrow as drier air settles into North Alabama.

TOMORROW THROUGH THURSDAY: These three days will be warm, with highs in the 80s. The best chance of showers tomorrow will be over the southern counties of the state, but one or two could be seen as far north as I-20. Wednesday and Thursday will be dry with a good supply of sunshine both days.

WEEKEND COOL DOWN: A Polar front will move into Alabama late Thursday night, and should bring the coolest air so far this season to the state by Friday and the weekend. Highs will drop into the 70s, and morning lows should be in the 40s both Saturday and Sunday morning. Dry air means blue sky and sunshine both days with very low humidity and excellent visibility.

The dry and pleasant weather should last into early next week.

TROPICS: The remnant wave associated with former Tropical Storm Ophelia is expected to regenerate; it is northeast of the Leeward Islands this afternoon. Ophelia will move to the north over the open Atlantic and is no threat to land. And, in the East Atlantic, Tropical Storm Phillipe will stay far away from land as it moves slowly to the north. There are no tropical systems threatening the U.S.
