Warming Trend Ahead

WARMING UP: Look for dry and warmer weather across Alabama through mid-week. With a partly sunny sky, we reach the low 60s today, and then we should be very close to 70 degrees tomorrow afternoon, which is well above the average high of 56 for December 14. No sign of Jack Frost for sure.

TO THE WEST: A major storm system is producing heavy mountain snow over Arizona and New Mexico, and will lift out across the Plains tomorrow, possibly firing up a few strong to severe storms over parts of Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma, and Southwest Arkansas. But, that system will weaken as it heads toward the Great Lakes, and we will just see the trailing front later in the week.

OUR NEXT RAIN: Still looks like the next rain event for Alabama will come late Thursday night and Friday, with occasional showers. Rain amounts will be 1/2 inch or less, most likely, and no severe weather is expected. In fact, probably not much thunder with little upper support for the surface front.

WEEKEND PEEK: The weekend looks mostly dry, and a little cooler. The GFS is printing a high of 55 Saturday, and 60 Sunday with a pretty decent amount of sunshine both days. The low early Sunday will be in the 32-36 degree range.

NEXT WEEK AND BEYOND: The pattern still doesn’t favor any serious cold air intrusions through the rest of the month. But, keep in mind this is Alabama, after all, and our average high here never drops below 52. If you are looking for consistently cold weather, you need to head north.

The 06Z GFS hints at some rain Christmas Eve, followed by a cool, dry day for Christmas… but this is all voodoo, of course, since Christmas weekend is still more than seven days out. See the Weather Xtreme video for long range details and ideas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode.
