FRIGID MORNING: Some early morning temperatures across Alabama from our team of Skywatchers include…

Broomtown 12
Black Creek 15
Kimberly 16
Snead 17
Coker 18
Helena 19
Fayette 19
Concord 19
Bessemer 20
Center Point 23

I am sure J.B. will run down a long list of lows here later this morning since it is our coldest morning so far this season. We have learned that the community of Broomtown, in far north Cherokee County, near the Georgia border, is often Alabama’s ice box on these clear, calm nights. D.L. Powell has a very good set of instruments and we always are interested to see “how low it goes” there.

WARM-UP BEGINS THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures will rise into the low 50s in most places later today with very dry air and a strong January sun. The warm-up continues through the rest of the week, with mid 50s tomorrow, and low to mid 60s by Friday. We will see some clouds showing up Friday, but the chance of rain looks tiny with limited moisture.

A FEW WEEKEND RAINDROPS: We will maintain some risk of showers Saturday and Saturday night, but rain amounts should be very light and spotty, generally under a quarter of an inch. For now we will forecast dry weather Sunday, in agreement with the ECMWF. Watch the Weather Xtreme video and you will see the 06Z GFS tries to keep some risk of light rain going on Sunday, but we will reject that solution for now. The weather stays mild with a high in the mid 60s Saturday, and close to 60 Sunday.

NEXT WEEK: Model madness makes it hard to get the exact timing down, but confidence is high in the general idea. We will have a rain event at mid-week, in the Tuesday- Wednesday time frame, followed by another shot of very cold air at the end of the week by Friday. The cold snap late in the week looks very similar to what we are dealing with this morning; colder spots down in the teens, with low 20s elsewhere on the coldest mornings. And, the cold air will be dry meaning no risk of winter weather mischief. Again, see the video for details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode.
