A Little Snow Later Today

TURNING COLDER: A deep upper trough to the west will keep Alabama cloudy and damp today. Some light rain or drizzle is likely this morning, and temperatures should begin to fall later today. And, in that cold air, some light snow is likely for about the northern third of the state (mainly along and north of I-20). Of course, with temperatures above freezing, we don’t expect any accumulation or travel issues. But, there could be a dusting across higher elevations of Northeast Alabama atop Lookout or Sand Mountain this evening, mainly above 1,500 feet. Both the RPM and the HRRR show this potential.

TOMORROW THROUGH SUNDAY: We will have a significant freeze both tomorrow and Saturday morning, with lows in the 20 to 25 degree range. Expect a few reports of teens across the colder valleys of North Alabama. But, on the positive side, the sun will be out in full force all three days. We stay cold tomorrow with a high only in the low 40s, but we do warm into the low to mid 50s over the weekend.

NEXT WEEK: Still looks like the next rain event comes Tuesday… the 06Z GFS hints we might see showers as early as Monday night. Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch look likely with no severe weather threat. Then, somewhat colder air moves back into the state Wednesday and the latter half of the week looks dry.

Still no signs of any serious snow or ice issues for Alabama for the rest of January. See the Weather Xtreme video for all of the maps and graphics that go along with this discussion.
