Mild Winter Days

SPRING-LIKE: One thing is for certain… our weather will be unseasonably mild through the weekend with daily highs well up in the 60s. We could very well touch 70 degrees Thursday or Friday afternoon, as the upper air winds just won’t allow any really cold air down this way anytime soon.

Today will be dry, with sunshine through scattered clouds; the high this afternoon will be somewhere between 66 and 70.

SHOWERS RETURN TOMORROW: A short wave will bring the risk of showers to Alabama tomorrow and tomorrow night. There could be a little thunder in spots, but there is no chance of severe weather or really heavy rain; amounts should be 1/2 inch or less. The showers will end late tomorrow night, or during the pre-dawn hours Thursday.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These days will be dry and very mild for early February with a mix of sun and clouds. Afternoon highs very close to 70… well above the average high for early February of 55.

WEEKEND OUTLOOK: An upper low will set up over the nation’s mid-section over the weekend, and bring a chance of showers to Alabama both Saturday and Sunday. Much like the system tomorrow, there probably won’t be much thunder, and rain won’t be all that heavy. But, just keep in mind some rain is possible at any time Saturday and Sunday with a generally cloudy sky. The weather stays mild with highs in the 60s.

NEXT WEEK: Model madness rules on Monday… the GFS is dry, but the ECMWF shows a soaking rain. Probably better to lean toward that wetter solution with the slow moving ULL over the Central Plains. Both models show drier and somewhat cooler air in here by Tuesday and Wednesday.

BRUTAL ALAKSA COLD: As I write this, Bettles, Alaska is reporting 59 degrees below zero as big time cold continues to cover the Land of the Midnight Sun. We will keep an eagle eye on that, but still no sign of it moving in our direction. The 06Z operational GFS still shows a colder look in the Feb 10-12 time frame, but not as cold as recent runs as the NAO stays positive. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long-range graphics and ideas.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
