Frigid Weekend Ahead

| February 10, 2012 @ 6:04 am

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

COLD AIR SO FAR ON THE WAY: We will see a high today in the mid 50s; that will feel pretty warm compared to the weekend weather we are expecting around here. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and we will maintain the chance of some scattered light rain this afternoon and tonight. Amounts will be under one-quarter inch with very limited moisture.

WEEKEND CHILL: Guidance continues to trend lower, and we will have to adjust temperatures downward. And, the RPM continues to suggests there could be a few light snow flurries early tomorrow morning, mainly along and north of I-59 as the cold air rushes into the state. Despite the sky becoming mostly sunny during the midday and afternoon hours, now both the GFS and the NAM are printing a high only at 40 degrees for Birmingham… a good part of North Alabama won’t get out of the 30s tomorrow with a biting north wind, keeping the wind chill index down around freezing at times during the day. It will be a huge change from the recent winter warmth.

By daybreak Sunday, with a clear sky and diminishing wind, looks like we will see a range from 15 to 24 degrees; the GFS is now printing 19 for Birmingham. And, despite maximum available sunshine, the high Sunday will be only in the low 40s.

Sure looks like the coldest air so far this season; up until now the coldest day was back on November 29 when the high was 41.

NEXT WEEK: The weather warms up. We reach the low 50s Monday as clouds return, and showers are likely Monday night and Tuesday. Then, we will have a chance of showers and possibly a few strong storms on Thursday, and by then the high will be nearing 70 degrees as the weather roller coaster ride continues. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.

STORM ALERT 2012: We had another packed house last night; the show was at Northwest-Shoals Community College in Phil Campbell; thanks to everyone for coming out. Next week we will be at Pleasant Grove High School at 6:30 Thursday… make plans to be there. So much to say about April 27, 2011… a generational tornado outbreak that killed 252 people in Alabama. At all of our tour stops we have a memorial with the names of all 252 that died.

NEED HELP WITH YOUR NOAA WEATHER RADIO? We will be at the Publix in Bessemer today from 10:30 until 1:00, and we will program your NOAA Weather Radio receiver at no charge. Every Alabama home and business needs one, especially with the spring tornado season getting close. You buy the radios for under $30 at any Publix location.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
