Only Isolated Showers Tomorrow

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

FAST CHANGES AHEAD: After a beautiful Monday, clouds will increase across our state tonight as a short wave moves in our direction. The wave will dampen out and pass well to the north, so we don’t expect any really significant rain across the state tomorrow; just a few isolated showers, mainly during the morning. The sun could very peek through tomorrow afternoon, and temperatures reach the mid 60s.

SPRING-LIKE WEDNESDAY/THURSDAY: The 12Z model runs are suggesting we will enjoy a high in the low 70s Wednesday, and mid 70s Thursday. In fact the GFS is printing 77 degrees for Birmingham on Thursday… if we reach that, it will be the warmest day so far this year, passing the 75 degree high we saw on January 25. Wednesday will be generally dry with a only a small risk of a shower, but showers and storms will increase late Thursday into Thursday night with a cold front and upper trough on the way.

SEVERE WEATHER? Lots of buzz about the very high STP numbers (significant tornado parameter) generated on the 12Z runs for Thursday evening from Memphis over to Muscle Shoals… if we do reach the mid to upper 70s there should be plenty of surface based instability, and the upper support looks pretty potent. So, I think there is no doubt there could very well some risk of severe weather late Thursday afternoon and Thursday night over the northern half of Alabama. Just way too early to be specific about the threat. Rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch look likely, and the rain should end late Thursday night.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: Friday will feature a clearing sky, but the weather will be breezy and cooler with a high in the low to mid 50s. The weekend will feature mostly sunny pleasant days and clear chilly nights; the high Saturday will be near 60, followed by low 60s Sunday. Coldest morning should come early Saturday when a light freeze is likely.

NEXT WEEK: The 12Z runs continue to suggest another rain producing system moves into Alabama Monday afternoon and Monday night. See the Weather Xtreme video for more long range ideas and all of the graphics that go along with this discussion.

STORM ALERT 2012: Our annual severe weather awareness tour across Alabama comes to Calhoun County this week… we will be at Pleasant Valley High School Thursday night; the show begins at 6:30… be sure and get there early for a good seat. Pleasant Valley is near Jacksonville, and not far from Gadsden. We hope to see many of your there.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Dr. Russ Schneider, Director Storm Prediction Center, will be our guest tonight. The show begins at 8:30 p.m. CST… and you can listen live via Ustream here.
