More Warm Weather Ahead

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

THIS AFTERNOON: Temperatures are generally in the low and mid 80s across Alabama this afternoon…. we have to reach the upper 80s to get into record territory, which is unlikely. The sky is partly sunny, and there is no rain on radar across Alabama.

TO THE WEST: A tornado watch is up for much of Texas until 10:00 tonight… basically from the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex southwest into the Hill Country. This is in the zone where the warm air over the eastern U.S. is mixing it up with the cold air out west. SPC maintains a “moderate risk” of severe weather for this region through tonight.

REST OF THE WEEK: Our weather won’t change much tomorrow and Wednesday… partly sunny both days and a high in the mid 80s. The big upper trough out west will evolve into a closer upper low during the mid-week period, and will drift only slowly to the northeast with time. We will mention a small risk of an afternoon shower Thursday, with a little better chance of scattered showers and storms Friday. Still, with only weak dynamic support, we don’t expect anything widespread, and organized severe weather is not likely. And, we stay with with a high around 80 Thursday and Friday.

WEEKEND PREVIEW: We will mention just the chance of a few widely scattered showers and storms on Saturday, but not a wash-out with a mix of sun and clouds. Sunday looks mostly sunny and dry; highs over the weekend will be in the 77-81 degree range. Not quite as warm as recent days, but still well above average for late March in Alabama.

AT THE BEACH: Weather looks pretty good for the spring break crowds from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. You will have some fog to deal with at times with the warm air moving over the cool water, but generally speaking expect about 7 to 9 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend. A few scattered showers could show up late in the week and this weekend, but no wash-out at all…. just a few passing showers around. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the low 70s, with upper 70s inland. The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 71 degrees.

LONG RANGE: Watch the Weather Xtreme video… you will notice the 12Z GFS is showing an eastern U.S. upper trough around March 30, and then again around April 4. This would suggest some decent rain opportunities along with cooler temperatures if by chance this is correct. Models are very inconsistent in the 7-15 day time frame, however.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Tonight’s Guest WeatherBrain is Rick Smith, the Warning Coordination Meteorologist at the NWS in Norman, OK. We will begin at 8:30 p.m. CDT, and you can listen live via uStream here.
