Warmest March EVER ! !
I bet this is not going to be news to anyone who regularly follows the Alabama Weather Blog. March was warm. Just how warm was it? According to National Weather Service (NWS) data based on observations since 1900, March, 2012, was the warmest March ever in Birmingham. Here are the numbers for the ten warmest months for March since 1900.
Row | Date | Monthly Avg High Temp |
1 | Mar., 2012 | 76.26 |
2 | Mar., 1907 | 74.77 |
3 | Mar., 1921 | 74.77 |
4 | Mar., 1910 | 73.90 |
5 | Mar., 2007 | 73.65 |
6 | Mar., 1945 | 73.23 |
7 | Mar., 1974 | 72.87 |
8 | Mar., 1997 | 72.45 |
9 | Mar., 1967 | 72.32 |
10 | Mar., 1918 | 72.16 |
This naturally raise the question as to what we can expect from the summer. The record warmth of March does not mean we’re headed for an extremely hot summer. In fact, research by the NWS office in Calera has shown that 7 out of 10 summers following a warm March have actually been at or below seasonal averages.
