Windy Today and Cooler

It was a cool morning with temperatures across Central Alabama dropping back into the 40s. Probably the biggest factor in our weather today will be the wind. After the passage of a cold front yesterday, we should see a fairly stiff northerly wind today at 15 to 25 mph with some higher gusts. The NWS in Birmingham has issued a wind advisory until 7 pm this evening.

There is one other concern to the forecast. Radar this morning shows a patch of clouds and rain just northwest of Paducah. The rain was moving steadily southeast and could impact the northeastern sections of Alabama, generally north of a line from about Florence to Anniston. As I write this, I really think most of Central Alabama will remain dry with some passing clouds. Temperatures today will only climb to highs in the upper 60s – about 68.

With a nice trough over the eastern US, we’ll remain relatively cool through Tuesday with the persistence of the northwesterly flow aloft. But as we get to Tuesday and into Wednesday, the overall upper air pattern flattens considerably. This should allow us to warm back toward highs around 80 by Wednesday and into the latter part of the week.

With the upper air pattern flattening out, we come more or less under a ridge aloft. This keeps the bulk of the westerlies well north of us. The big question for the latter part of the week will be how close a cold front will get to us as a strong trough moves across the Great Lakes. That trough will drag a front into the Ohio River Valley on Thursday and into Tennessee on Friday. That will mean a small chance of showers for us for Friday. But as the ridge builds in a bit stronger into Saturday and Sunday, the front should wash out as highs stay in the lower 80s.

So it looks like a fairly nice week ahead with some coolish temperatures reminding us of what Spring can feel like.

Taking a peek into voodoo country, the pattern remains somewhat benign for us. Rain chances look pretty good around May 2nd. After that the westerlies seem to be pushed off to the north with strong ridging across the southern tier of the US. That means a summer-like pattern with daily chances for showers.
