Winter Weather Issues To The West
Just got this from our friend Alan Gerard, the MIC at the NWS in Jackson…
EMs/Media,
In collaboration with our surrounding NWS offices, we are issuing a winter weather advisory for the area along and south of Interstate 20 for tonight and Wednesday morning. As we have been saying, we are expecting some intermittent mainly very light precipitation which will fall as a mixture of rain, freezing drizzle and sleet. Since we have had reports of some significant sleet at times along with some rain with temperatures very near freezing, we are concerned that as this intermittent light precipitation continues overnight we may begin to have some icing problems on bridges and overpasses. Again, this is not expected to be a major ice event, but of course any amount of ice on roadways is a concern.
Please call us at anytime tonight if you have any questions or need an update.

At 4:00pm I drove through moderate sleet in Millbrook AL. The Heavy Radar echos are from sleet mixing with the rain. I am sitting at 37 degrees right now and with the amount of moisture spread all the way back into west Texas do we have a chance for a measurable winter weather event?

My comment is “most” of what you are seeing on radar across northern Mississippi and Alabama is not reaching the ground. There may be a few sleet pellets over night but nothing significant at all. Actually, the better sleet/rain chances will ironically be to our south near Montgomery but even there it will be light and the ground too warm for any problems. Texas, parts of Louisiana and southern Mississippi could see some slick spots.
