Strong to severe storms cover much of Central Walker into southwestern Cullman County at this hour.

There is a severe thunderstorm warning for Walker County. Marion and Winston have been cleared.

A new warning was just posted for Jefferson, southern Walker and Shelby Counties.

The storms will be into northwestern Jefferson County around Corner shortly. They are approaching Sayre as well.

They are about 20 minutes from Adamsville and 30 minutes from Hueytown.

The storms will affect much of the Birmingham area between now and 5:30 a.m.

The storms have weakened slightly in the past few minutes but are still packing a punch with very heavy rain, strong gusty winds and perhaps some small hail to go with the intense lightning.

More heavy storms are moving through downtown Birmingham right now. They extend southeast into the Irondale area. I can hear more thunder from my location in Trussville.

Still lots of heavy rain and lightning from near Birmingham to Centrevile to Columbiana, Clanton, Prattville and Montgomery. These storms are not severe and the atmosphere in front of them is not tremendously unstable so they should slowly weaken.

It is interesting to see how all this came together tonight. We have a stationary boundary lying northwest to southeast across North Central Alabama. There is a weak surface low over western Tennessee. The front provided the spark and the low was able to pump a reservoir of warm, moist, unstable air up into the boundary to keep fueling the storms. The presence of a mesoscale convective vortex provided extra shear to keep the storms well organized and the upper flow was aligned parallel to the boundary, giving the storms a track to follow and reform along.
