THIS MORNING: Overnight showers and storms, while a bit noisy, were not severe, and early this morning most of the activity is east of I-65. Some of the heaviest rain as I write this, just before the sun comes up, is from near Billingsley to Goodwater to just below Mount Cheaha. Showers and storms are moving east…

REST OF THE DAY: The dewpoint at Birmingham is still 70 degrees this morning, so the air is still rather moist, and I figure we will probably see additional showers and storms forming this morning along a surface boundary to the north. By afternoon, the best chance of storms should be generally along and south of I-59 as drier air works into Northwest Alabama. Like the overnight period, a few strong storms are possible, but major severe weather issues aren’t expected. We won’t get out of the 80s today due to the clouds and showers.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: These two days look generally dry. We might consider an outside risk of a shower Thursday afternoon as moisture begins to return; the high tomorrow will be close to 90, with low 90s possible Thursday.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: We will need to mention scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms on Friday and Saturday as moisture surges northward and a surface boundary approaches from the north. Some beneficial rain is possible on these two days; it won’t rain all the time, but a shower or storm will be possible at just about any time. Highs will drop back into the 80s because of the clouds and showers. Model data continue to suggest the front will hang up around the Tennessee border, meaning at least a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.

LONG RANGE: Still no sign of any really serious or excessive heat around here through the end of August. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.

AT THE BEACH: You will have a mix of sun and storms every day through the weekend; each day the chance of any one spot getting wet from Panama City to Gulf Shores will run in the 30 to 50 percent range, with about 4 to 6 hours of sun each day. Highs will stay generally in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 86 degrees.

TROPICS: The remnant mass of storms associated with former Tropical Depression 7 will move into Central America later today, and the rest of the Atlantic basin remains very quiet with only a couple of disorganized tropical waves around.
