SOGGY MORNING: Showers linger over much of Alabama this morning after a wet night. Over the past 36 hours the heaviest rain in Alabama has been north of a line from Millport to Jasper to Gadsden; amounts over 5 inches were reported around Muscle Shoals, where major flooding was an issue late yesterday, and radar suggests totals over 4 inches are possible around Guin in Marion County. Our SKYCAM at Hamilton High School, just up the road, shows about 3 and a half inches.

Some of the heaviest rain during the pre-dawn hours have some over Bibb and Shelby Counties, where amounts over one inch have been common.

THE DAY AHEAD: Showers will continue at times this morning, but the rain will end from west to east this afternoon as drier blows into Alabama. We might even see a little sunshine by mid to late afternoon, especially over Northwest Alabama.

COOL CHANGE: The coolest air so far this season (I should mention this is still technically summer until Saturday, but we consider this meteorological fall) will arrive tonight. By daybreak tomorrow, we expect lows in the 47 to 52 degree range for most places. Tomorrow will feature sunshine back in full supply with a high in the 70s and very low humidity. A really delightful day.

We stay dry Thursday and Friday with a slow warming trend and a sunny sky both days. We will be in the low to mid 80s by Friday.

OUR WEEKEND: Another cold front will move in here late Saturday, with a fresh supply of cool air arriving Sunday. The GFS hints at some risk of showers on that front from Tennessee north, but the air is so dry here I think we won’t have to worry about any rain. Both days should feature a good supply of sunshine; the high Saturday will be in the low to mid 80s, but we won’t get past the low to mid 70s Sunday with a fresh north breeze. And, again, a pretty decent chance we visit the upper 40s early Sunday and Monday morning.

It is interesting to note that our temperatures here have been well below average since the beginning of August.

The dry, pleasant fall weather will continue into at least the first half of next week.

TROPICS: Tropical Storm Nadine in the East Atlantic will meander around the Azores and dissipate in coming days; the rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode we recorded last night.
