HALO AROUND THE SUN: Anybody see this in the Alabama sky this afternoon?

That is a “22 degree halo” with a circumzenithal arc on the top. Caused by high cirrus clouds, which are ice crystals… refracting sunlight. Very interesting optics.

COLD NIGHT AHEAD: If the sky goes totally clear and the wind dies down, we have some frost potential early tomorrow with lows in the 30s. Maybe even a light freeze for the colder valleys, but the wind needs to settle down for that to happen.

REST OF THE WEEK: Looks great, with sunny days, clear nights, and a slow warming trend. We reach the mid 60s tomorrow and Thursday, followed by low 70s Friday. Great night for the trick or treaters tomorrow night with temperatures falling through the 50s during the evening.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Saturday looks great, with a good supply of sunshine and a high in the 70s. But, moisture begins to return Sunday, and with an approaching upper trough/cold front, we will bring in a chance of showers Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. The 12Z GFS suggests the risk of showers will linger into Monday as well. Rain amounts should be generally less than 1/2 inch with only limited moisture. Drier air returns Tuesday.

SANDY’S CIRCULATION SLOWLY SPINNING DOWN: The system formerly known as Hurricane Sandy is over Pennsylvania this afternoon; the highest winds are now on the west side of the circulation over the Great Lakes, where gale force winds have been reported today. And, snow continue to fall from the mountains of East Tennessee and West North Carolina north to West Virginia, but the snow rates will slowly decrease tonight as the system weakens.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for the high school football games Thursday and Friday night. Clear with temperatures falling through the 60s during the first half, and into the 50s during the second half of the games across North and Central Alabama.

Saturday, Auburn hosts New Mexico State (11:30 a.m. kickoff); the sky will be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 70 degrees, rising into the mid 70s by the final whistle. Alabama will be in Baton Rouge to take on LSU (7:00 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with about a one in five risk of shower during the game. Temperatures will fall from the upper 70s at kickoff into the low 70s by the fourth quarter.
