Warmer Days Ahead

SEVERE CLEAR: Hardly a cloud in the Alabama sky this afternoon, with temperatures generally in the 60s after a very cold start to the day. Coldest spot I could find was Valley Head with 25 degrees… frost was seen in many places.
Tonight won’t be as cold as last night, with most spots holding above 40, although the colder valleys of Northeast Alabama will probably make a run down toward frost territory again.
TOMORROW/SATURDAY: The warm-up is on. We project a high in the mid 70s tomorrow, and based on the 12Z model runs, it looks like we have a real chance of reaching 80 degrees Saturday with a partly sunny sky. Pretty good chance it might be the warmest day of the month of November.
SUNDAY SHOWERS: We will maintain a chance of showers during the day Sunday as an upper short wave passes through. Moisture will be pretty limited, so rain amounts should be light, mostly under 1/4 inch. No wash-out, just some light rain at times.
NEXT WEEK: A strong upper trough will carve out over the Southeast U.S. Monday, and a surface low will begin to spin up off the Georgia coast. There might be enough forcing with this feature for a few showers Monday night or Tuesday, mainly over East Alabama, but for now we will leave the forecast cool and dry Monday and Tuesday. We will most likely have a hard time getting out of the 50s Tuesday with a cool breeze, and 30s are likely by Wednesday morning. The rest of the week looks cool and dry.
ELECTION DAY WEATHER: Generally speaking, the weather looks pretty calm over much of the nation next Tuesday; a few showers are possible over Georgia and the Carolinas, but no major storms. We do note a nor’easter could impact the upper Atlantic coast by Wednesday/Thursday, but of course nothing like Sandy.
NOV 11-12: Still signs coming from the GFS that we might have our first threat of strong to severe thunderstorms here in Alabama on one of these days with a dynamic weather system sweeping in from the west. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for the high school football games tonight and Friday night. Clear with temperatures falling through the 60s during the first half, and into the 50s during the second half of the games across North and Central Alabama.
Saturday, Auburn hosts New Mexico State (11:30 a.m. kickoff); the sky will be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 72 degrees, rising into the mid 70s by the final whistle. Alabama will be in Baton Rouge to take on LSU (7:00 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with about a one in five risk of shower during the game. Temperatures will fall from the upper 70s at kickoff into the low 70s by the fourth quarter. And, UAB will at Southern Miss (6:30 p.m. kickoff); there will be some clouds around, but only a small risk of a shower. Temperatures will fall from 76 at kickoff to 72 by the game’s end.
