Warmer Today; A Few Showers Sunday

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

WARMER AFTERNOONS: Alabama’s weather will stay dry today with a good supply of sunshine. Look for a high in the mid 70s this afternoon, about five degrees above the average high of 69. Tomorrow will be even warmer, with temperatures approaching the 80 degree mark as the sky stays mostly sunny to start the weekend.

SHOWERS SUNDAY? We will continue to mention a chance of showers Sunday with a surface front moving into the state, but upper support is weak, and moisture is pretty limited, so rain amounts should be light and spotty. Cooler air begins to return with high closer to 70 degrees.

NEXT WEEK: Energy will move down from the northwest and carve out a deep upper trough over the Southeast U.S. Monday/Tuesday, and at the surface a low pressure area will form on the stalled front over South Georgia. This could very well circulate some moisture back into Alabama, and we will insert some risk of light rain on these two days, mainly over the eastern third of the state. We stay cool with a high around 60 degrees Monday and Tuesday.

The latter half of next week looks cool and dry with highs in the 60s and lows mostly in the 40s. We do note another nor’easter is likely just off the upper Atlantic coast Wednesday; nothing destructive like Sandy, but it will bring lots of wind and rain to the coast of New Jersey and points north, with some interior snow. See the Weather Xtreme video for details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Great weather for the high school football games tonight. Clear with temperatures falling through the 60s during the first half, and into the 50s during the second half of the games across North and Central Alabama.

Tomorrow, Auburn hosts New Mexico State (11:30 a.m. kickoff); the sky will be mostly sunny with a kickoff temperature near 73 degrees, rising into the upper 70s by the final whistle. Alabama will be in Baton Rouge to take on LSU (7:00 p.m. kickoff)… the sky will be mostly cloudy with about a one in five risk of shower during the game. Temperatures will fall from the upper 70s at kickoff into the low 70s by the fourth quarter. And, UAB will at Southern Miss (6:30 p.m. kickoff); there will be some clouds around, but only a small risk of a shower. Temperatures will fall from 76 at kickoff to 72 by the game’s end.

SPOTTER TRAINING: Here at ABC 33/40, we only have one spotter training event every year, and that event is less than one month away. Storm Alert Xtreme will be at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center on Saturday, November 10 beginning at 9:00. If you are a current ABC 33/40 Skywatcher, or a volunteer storm spotter, you need to be there for “re-training”. Yes, we learn something new every year and share our knowledge at this event.

And, if you have never been trained, and want to help us during severe weather, you need to be there as well. Remember, the radar beam can be 5,000 feet off the ground or higher; the only way we really know what is happening at ground level is through the eyes of trained spotters. And, we need many more. Brian Peters is our trainer; he is one of the best in the business. Brian was the Warning-Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) of the National Weather Service Birmingham before joining our team. I will lead a session on social media, live streaming, and communication techniques during severe weather. And, we are delighted to announce that Kevin Laws of the National Weather Service in Birmingham will lead a session on using dual-pol radar data.

If you have kids that love weather, bring them. If you want to make the Alabama severe weather warning process better, you need to come. And, after we are through, you will gain free admission to the Alabama International Auto Show, which is going on in the same building. There is no need to register, and no cost. Just show up by 9:00.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.

I will be doing a weather program this morning at Moundville Elementary… look for the next discussion here by 4:00 or so this afternoon. Enjoy the day!
